Q The grade on this single essay counts as ten percent of the course grade (a possible letter grade). Identify this assignment as “Formal Essay 4.” As “technology advances and the demands spread for higher minimum wage across the country,” more businesses are searching for and adapting to ways that reduce labor costs through the use of highly productive machines. Access this source to read Gretel Kauffman’s article, “Is a pizza chain run by robots the future of the industry?” (Links to an external site.) Compose a persuasive response (minimum 500 words) that specifically addresses Kauffman’s report that “Zume and other restaurants have been able to save money by hiring more robots and fewer workers . . . .” This assignment also requires a Works Cited page, but that page is never included in the word count. In this essay response, also provide an opinion about “a number of other establishments, including Olive Garden and Buffalo Wild Wings” that are “virtually eliminating the need for humans at the counter.” This essay must specifically address the light green, yellow, and light gray bracketed highlighted passages in the Kauffman article. This essay must also address Kauffman’s question: “Are robots the future of pizza [or other fast-food service establishments]?” Agree or disagree with the types of changes businesses are making in their practices, but your thesis must take a firm stand on the issue of whether robotic workers are good or bad for America’s economy and its labor market. COVID, other maladies, and the current president's economy may not be a factor in this essay assignment. Keep in mind that some human workers (at this point) must provide periodic and as-needed maintenance for the robots. This essay must also include a Mike Rowe quotation from the video below. Some students are familiar with this video from an EH 1301 Discussion assignment. The Rowe quotation must be at least one complete line of text about robot workers but no more than three lines of text. For instructions about citing a video for this course, access this informative handout. (Links to an external site.) The textbook, Canvas, and Google Drive may never be used as URL’s for sources. Before developing a thesis for your essay in the introductory paragraph, access and read “A Word about the Thesis” handout. (Links to an external site.) Based on that guidance, develop a thesis for Formal Essay 4. For some helpful tips composing an introductory paragraph with a thesis, it would behoove students to view the “Introductory Paragraph” video (3:03) located in the DW1.2 assignment. QUOTATION REQUIREMENT: One direct quotation is required from each source used, but the accumulative lines of direct quotations in the essay may not exceed twelve. Except for the instructions about the Mike Rowe quotation, direct quotations used must be a minimum of two lines of text each but not more than four complete lines of text. REMINDER: Direct quotations are enclosed with quotation marks. View the example of quotation mark use below, which also includes the in-text citation. EXAMPLE: “I don’t lose any sleep at night over the potential for failure. I cannot even spell the word” (Mattis). NOTE: The above quotation is attributed to General James N. “Mad Dog” Mattis, USMC (Ret.). A full citation would appear on the Works Cited section of a paper. NOTE: The Mattis quotation above is not two complete lines of text as required by this assignment. Quotations must be placed within separate paragraphs, not the introductory or concluding sentence of a paragraph, and a quotation may never form its own paragraph. IN-TEXT CITATIONS: No matter how many quotations are used in an EH 1302 essay, an in-text citation must be provided with that quotation even when the author’s name is used to introduce that quotation. This requirement is specific to this course. Other instructors’ guidance may differ. If needed, access this handout for an example of an in-text citation in this course. (Links to an external site.) To correctly format a full citation on the Works Cited page for this online course, study the correctly formatted, correctly constructed example citation below. NOTE: The author’s name above is for instructional purposes only. The original Babylon Bee article does not show an author. Click here for additional instructional information and an annotated example of a correctly formatted citation with an author (first and last name) and a complete date, which is required for most citations in this course. (Links to an external site.) On a Works Cited page (MLA format style), use and cite the Kauffman source and the other online sources. The tertiary online source must include the first and last name of the author and a full date (dd/mmm/yyyy). The Works Cited page must be positioned on the page following the last page of your essay. The instructor must have unfettered access to all sources. The model essay is the correct MLA format style for this course. Review the model essay with a Works Cited page here. (Links to an external site.) Required Primary Online Source: The Kauffman article. Required Secondary Online Source: The Mike Rowe YouTube video. Required Tertiary Online Source: A related online source of your choice written by a different author (first and last name). This source must comply with Item #8 in the "Instructor Addendum to the Syllabus." This source may be used as the tertiary source if desired. (Links to an external site.) Before selecting a tertiary source, review Item #8 on the “Instructor Addendum to the Syllabus.” (Links to an external site.) No other sources may be used for this assignment. A word about the Bible and reference sources: The Bible is a great source, but the Bible, other sacred documents, and reference sources (such as the dictionary or encyclopedia) may not be used in this assignment. POINT OF VIEW: Compose the essay in the third-person point of view of a pizza restaurant chain customer of a local pizza restaurant. REMINDER: You are writing about the third person, not as the third person. In every paragraph, provide a given name for that customer. Use no other third-person names in this essay. However, the names of the authors of sources or those mentioned by the authors may be used in the essay. For help with third-person point of view, watch the short video below. On a Works Cited page (MLA format style), use and cite the required online sources. The secondary online source must include the first and last name of the author and a full date (dd/mmm/yyyy). The Works Cited page must be positioned on the page following the last page of your essay. The instructor must have unfettered access to all sources. The model essay is the correct MLA format style for this course. Review the model essay with a Works Cited page here. (Links to an external site.) No other sources may be used. The textbook, Canvas, and Google Drive may never be used as URL’s for sources. PARAGRAPH REQUIREMENT: The paragraph requirement for Formal Essay assignments is introductory paragraph, a minimum of three body paragraphs, and concluding paragraph. Paragraph divisions provide transition, clarity, and organization to an essay. For some helpful tips composing a concluding paragraph, it would benefit students to view the “Introductory Paragraph” video located in Module 1, Week 1, Daily Writing 1.2. PARAGRAPH DEVELOPMENT: Paragraph development: In journalistic and some other styles of writing, a paragraph can be just about anything that the writer composes as long as it effectively holds the reader’s attention. A paragraph in EH 1301 and EH 1302 must be attention-getting, but more structured, consisting of a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. Your response must be a minimum of 500 words, including introduction, three body paragraphs (minimum), and conclusion. The Works Cited page is never included in the word count. We have all watched films and read books about robots assuming human roles and becoming subservient to one another.” Automation and artificial intelligence will liberate people from dangerous and repetitive occupations, enabling them to concentrate on more fascinating tasks, resulting in improved productivity and higher wages for workers” (Kauffman). This has been seen at the California pizza restaurant Zume Pizza, which in 2015 started replacing human workers with artificially intelligent robots (Kauffman).
